In this experiment we're testing the impact of pitch rate on fermentation profile. John Palmer's Brew Your Own article on Yeast Pitching Rates was used as reference when determining our three pitch rate conditions. Follow this link for a calculator for yeast starters and target pitch rates. Our target pitch rates are listed below.
Low - 0.2M/ml/°Plato
Recommended - 0.5M/ml/°Plato
High - 1M/ml/°Plato
John, Sheri and Alex each brewed batches of beer using a single mass and boil which was split into equal portions for each condition. Links for their recipes and brewing notes are below.
The club conducted a blind tasting of this experiment at our October meeting. 14 tasters responded to a survey in which they attempted to guess which samples corresponded to each pitch rate. Those results are included below.
US-05 (American Pale Ale) - 1 taster guessed all conditions correctly, 8 guessed a single condition correctly
London Ale III (English Pale Ale) - 2 tasters guessed all conditions correctly, 8 guessed a single condition correctly
WB-06 (Weissbier) - 1 taster guessed all conditions correctly, 6 guessed a single condition correctly
